Twenty high school wrestling teams from around the state participated in the Redskin Invitational Wrestling Tournament, hosted by Sanford High School Jan. 4 and 5.
Sanford wrestler Zack Clarke (125) took second place after pinning an opponent in 3:23 and decisions of 8-6 and 2-0.
“I thought Zack wrestled real well,” Sanford Coach John Caramihalis said. “The level of competition is very high and he handled himself well.”
Caramihalis said it was disappointing Clarke couldn’t win in the finals.
“Overall, Zack had an outstanding tournament,” Caramihalis said.
Clarke was also awarded the Ken Hover Memorial Award for the most outstanding Sanford wrestler.
Paul Rivard (145) earned a fifth place medal after posting a 0:56 pin and decisions of 7-3, 6-5 and 4-1.
“Paul wrestled back after losing a match,” Caramihalis said. “He did an excellent job wrestling back. I think it showed a lot of character in getting a place finish.”
Caramilahlis said the team performed well overall at their home tournament.
“We had very few that didn’t get a win in the tournament,” he said. “Based on the level of competition, I think we handled ourselves well.”
Caramilhalis said the team is in a “rebuilding mode,” which will pay off when the wrestlers move on to the regional and state competitions.
Other Sanford wrestlers who won matches at the tournament included Kyle Beaudoin (135) major decision 9-0, Colby Pepin (152) with a major decision and win by forfeit, Russell Gray (160) pin in 2:14, Ryan Bogan (189) 2-1 and 8-6 decisions and Nick Worthing (215) major decision 10-2. Tony Labbe (215) and Nolan Brown (285) each received a bye.
The team from Timberlane earned 231.5 team points, followed by Lowell (192.0), Danbury (186.0), Massabesic (185), Concord (153.5), Belfast (125.0), Camden Hills (95.5), Cumberland (86.0), Bonny Eagle (73.5), Lisbon (72.0), North Providence (66.0), Mountain Valley (57.0), Marshwood (48.5), Sanford (47.0), Foxcroft Academy (38.0), Westbrook (37.0), Biddeford (24.0), Oxford Hills (22.5), St. Thomas Aquinas (20.0), Oyster River (13.0) and Sanford B team (2.0).
