One week left to nominate Register's Great Person (Printed Dec. 13, 2007)
Nominations are coming in slowly for this year’s
Great Person award. You still have another week to send in your
nominations before voting begins. Only one person has been nominated as
of press time.
•Joseph Armstrong of Sanford was nominated by Sandra E. Taylor of Saco. In the nomination she wrote, “Joe is a disabled veteran who, as president of Rolling Thunder, Chapter 2, Maine, devotes much of his life to advocating for POW-MIAs and helping all veterans’ causes. His chapter of Rolling Thunder has infused renewed interest in and enthusiasm for veterans’ affairs and activities in the Sanford/Springvale area and beyond. Joe also serves as the state director of The Order of the Silver Rose, an organization which recognizes widows and family members of veterans who die as a result of Agent Orange. He tirelessly works for causes to benefit others, be it a toy run for kids, raising money for the local Veteran’s Career House or cleaning gravestones of Civil War veterans, not to mention all that he has done to help promote the new Dirigo Chapter of Gold Star Wives of America.”
The qualifications are simple – the person you nominate must live or work in the communities of Sanford, Springvale, Acton or Shapleigh – and they must be someone who is making a difference in the community.
The nominee can be someone working tirelessly behind the scenes at a non-profit organization, or someone more well-known who is dedicating their days to improving your town.
“This award is unique in that anyone can be nominated. There are no special qualifications,” said Brandi Neal, managing editor. “Its purpose is to honor those people who make our communities such a great place to live. It can be someone that you know really well, or someone you’ve met in passing – but has had an impact on you.”
Nominating that person for the Great Person Award is one way to say, “Thank you!” for all they do during the year.
There are two steps in the Great Person Award process — first are the nominations and then there is the voting.
Nominations will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 17. A ballot of everyone nominated will then be printed in the editions of Dec. 20 and Jan. 3 (there will not be a paper Dec. 27). Voting will take place from Dec. 20 through Jan. 7 at 5 p.m. The winner of the 2007 Great Person Award will be announced in the Jan. 10 issue.
The winner receives a plaque and is asked to be the subject of the Weekly Interview.
